One of the fundamental philosophies in Bali is the concept of the Tri Hita Karana, roughly translated as three harmonies balanced to create peace and happiness. The phrase Tri Hita Karana comes from Sansekerta Language and describes a unique balance between the divine and humans, humans and humans, as well as humans and the environment. These three harmonies can be described in the following way:

Parhyangan is our relationship to the divine. Here we live in harmony and balance with gods and the spiritual world by activities such as praying at one’s temple, performing holy acts and also treating one’s body like a holy place, nourishing it and keeping it clean.
Pawongan is the balance between human and human and emphasizes the value of maintaining good relations with others. Balinese consider that right thought, right speech, and right conduct are key elements to achieving this balance.
Palemahan describes the balance between us and nature. Central to this concept is treating our environment with respect and maintains the perspective that a healthy planet will contribute to a more rewarding life. Often, Balinese demonstrate the importance of Palemahan by making offerings to a tree in gratitude for balance with nature.

In Bali, these philosophies are not just a distant creed but a reality lived and moved through on a daily basis. At Green School, we believe that respect for nature, respect for self, and respect for others are powerful tenets that the world desperately needs. In fact, our curriculum and schedule reflect these very things. As in Tri Hita Karana, we too seek to create peace and happiness through a balanced education.
